Kentucky is located in the mid-western part of the United States, and is often referred to as the Bluegrass State. That nickname goes back to the state’s long history of fertile soil, making Kentucky a prime farming location. Kentucky is the 26th largest populated state in the country, and the 37th largest. With major cities such as Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and Owensboro, there are plenty of great criminal justice job opportunities. It may be a good idea to choose a college that is close to one of these cities as it will make the job hunt a little simpler.

The reason many people choose to pursue their criminal justice degree is that there are so many job opportunities available once college is completed. A criminal justice degree does not limit a person to one or three types of jobs. In fact, there are 15-20 different jobs that someone can take on after they finish their criminal justice degree. For example, it is possible to go into the public sector and serve as a police officer. On the other hand, someone could become a security manager or private investigator.

Kentucky is one of the cheapest states in the United States, meaning that salaries are also bound to be lower than places such as Illinois or New York. Police officers typically earn $25,000 to $30,000 a year, with employees higher in the organization’s structure making close to $80,000 a year. Meanwhile, private jobs are likely to pay anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 a year.

If you are serious about attending college in Kentucky, it is important to have a general understanding of scholarships in the state. Your first source of scholarships and grants will be the college you have been accepted to. Their financial aid package should give you some relief, but it is likely you will have to look for other sources of funds. There are private scholarships available for criminal justice students, and those can range from $1000 to $10000 a year. Each scholarship has different requirements and deadlines, so it is important to do extensive online research while applying.
